IRIX Installation Notes

I've pulled a lot of this from various sources on the internet, specifically here.

  • Boot the system and click the "Stop for Maintenance" button when it appears.
  • Place the Installation Tools disc in the CDROM Drive.
  • Click the "Install System Software" button.
  • Select "Local CD-ROM" and then click "Install" and "Continue".
  • After a while, you will be shown an installation prompt. Enter "13" to go to the Admin menu.
  • Enter "11" to clean your hard drive.
  • You will be asked multiple times to confirm this action. Do so.
  • Enter ".." to go back to leave the Admin menu.
  • Enter "1" to pick the installation source.
  • Enter "/CDROM/dist" as the installation source.
  • When asked about which stream to install, select the maintenance stream.
  • You will now be asked to insert a series of CD's. I chose this order:
    • Overlays [2 of 3]
    • Overlays [3 of 3]
    • Foundation 1
    • Foundation 2
    • Development Foundation
    • Development Libraries
    • ONC/NFS Version 3
  • When you are done entering CD's, enter "done", which will take you back to the main prompt.
  • To select the default install set, enter "keep *" following by "install standard" and "install prereqs".
  • Enter "10", which will show you the conflicts in your installation. This can be the most frustrating part of the installation. In many cases, you can chose to have it install the missing dependencies, which in most cases is the second option. To do this, enter "conflicts 1b" (or what ever the correct option is). It will prompt for the CD in question. Once it has read it. Enter "10" again to view the remaining conflicts.
    • Note: I've never been able to resolve the conflict for "java_dev.sw.base". With this conflict, I just choose option 1a. It then presents you with another conflict, to which I choose option 1a.
  • Enter "go", which will start the installation.
  • During the installation, you will be asked for CD's. Just enter the CD and the installation will detect it and proceed.
  • After the installation has completed, enter "quit" at the prompt. The system will finalize some settings and then reboot into your new IRIX install.
